As International Day of Potato draws near, Potatoes Australia Ltd is calling on businesses, producers, and food industry leaders across the country to unite in a nationwide celebration of one of Australia’s most loved and essential crops, Potatoes.
This year’s global theme, “Shaping History, Feeding the Future,” highlights the potato’s enduring significance across centuries and its growing potential to nourish generations to come. It’s a timely reminder of the potato’s journey from staple crop to a powerhouse of innovation, sustainability, and health in the modern food system.
As part of the 2025 campaign, Potatoes Australia Ltd is excited to launch three new initiatives to spark community participation.
This is an exciting opportunity for Australians to be part of something bigger — a celebration that’s fun, informative, and supportive of Australian potato producers, packers and processors.
Potatoes Australia Ltd has engaged a leading Australian Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian and Nutritionist, Jemma O’Hanlon.
As a passionate advocate for healthy living and a champion of International Day of Potato, Jemma will be a central voice in the conversation, sharing evidence-based insights on the incredible health benefits of potatoes and helping to reshape consumer perceptions.

After making waves in the USA, Team Potato is now hitting Australian shores. We’ll be calling on Australians to join a growing movement that celebrates everyday athletes who are dedicated to achieving their best by nourishing their bodies with potatoes.

May 30, International Day of Potato, is globally recognised by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the United Nations, honouring the vital role potatoes play in global nutrition, food security, and agricultural economies. In Australia, the potato industry produced over 1.5 million tonnes in 2023/24, valued at more than $1.1 billion (2023/24 Australian Horticulture Statistics Handbook). While the numbers are impressive, the opportunity to boost awareness and demand is even greater.
Potatoes are a powerful, nutrient-dense vegetable and a cornerstone of Australian horticulture. This year, we’re calling on all industry stakeholders to join forces to educate, inspire, and engage Australians in celebrating the versatility and value of locally grown potatoes.
Potatoes Australia Ltd has officially registered its participation in the global event and is rolling out national initiatives designed to bring visibility to Australian-grown potatoes and potato products, while supporting local producers, packers, and processors.
